This entry from the St Ninans Weaver Row Primary School logbook from December 1919 gives details of the first time children at the school received anything special for Christmas. Prior to this, the children broke up for their seasonal vacation without any celebration. Here you can see, the tree was provided by friends of the school and decorated by the older children for the younger ones. At a time when many children began their working lives at 14, Christmas treats were probably viewed as being for little children only.
