Viola Stirling’s Nature Diary – 17 Dec 1921

We are approaching Christmas in Viola’s next diary entry. She is exploring the grounds at Gartinstarry and notes some unusual features of a log she has found. Gartinstarry is located near Buchlyvie.

In all honesty, we are not 100% sure what Viola has found. It looks like she has found an old log which had another tree growing from it but we could be completely wrong!

There is a natural phenomenon where tree trunks or branches fuse together. This is known as inoculation and occurs within several species native to Britain.

If you have any idea what Viola has found then let us know!

Dec 17th Gartinstarry 10.30 a.m.

Saw a log which had been split in half revealing the

original top of the tree which had been sawn off

embedded in the wood. The tree must have been

growing very vigorously at the time it was

cut off. Most trees would have

died at once.
