This month’s Document of the Month focuses on a collection of records that has just arrived at the Archives and is currently in the process of being catalogued.
Staff at the Archives have been delighted to receive the deposit of the records of St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Dunblane with the Service just a few weeks ago.
The records are a wonderful addition to our collections and include registers of baptism, marriage and burial, records of services, including the interestingly named ‘Book of the Names of Strange Preachers’, which, in fact, records those occasions when visiting ministers gave sermons at the Church.
There are minutes of the Vestry, the committee that oversees the administration of the Church, as well as those of the Annual General Meetings and the financial records of the organisation.
Of particular note are the various plans in the collection, including plans of the churchyard, showing the positions of various grave plots, and of the new Vestry, built in 1928.
This interesting and valuable archival collection will join those of other Episcopal Churches in the area whose records have been deposited at the Council Archives, including Holy Trinity Church, Stirling, St Saviour’s Church, Bridge of Allan and St James The Great, Dollar.
